It’s time for a special edition of the newsletter where I highlight a trending meme. If you want in, you can subscribe here. Views are my own. Happy reading!
What is the meme?
The caption “get me to god’s country” paired with some sort of “location” – perhaps fictional, like the Roku loading screen, or real, like an AMC movie theater.
“Who” is in the meme?
Locations that seem mid in any other context, but with the ironic caption, are now considered “holy.”
When did the meme pop up?
Country singer-songwriter Morgan Wallen abruptly walked off Saturday Night Live last week, then posted an Instagram Story of an airplane with the caption “Get me to God’s country.”
Where is the meme?
Text-based platforms.
Why is the meme?
“Critics online and in Wallen's Instagram comments are keen on turning this into some kind of culture war battle, though it seems as if Wallen was simply eager to leave New York City and get back to his home in the South,” Randall Colburn wrote for Entertainment Weekly. “Hey, the Big Apple isn't for everyone.”
