It’s time for a special edition of the newsletter where today, guest contributor Rose Katz highlights a trending meme. If you want in, you can subscribe here. Views are the writer’s own. Happy reading!
What is the meme?
A person behind the camera will be filming a friend, parent or other person they know while saying, “I’m so hungry I could eat...” Then, they name a random figure in the other person’s life that they likely haven’t thought about for years. Sometimes the person filming will know the significance of the person they mention and other times it will simply be a random name they found digging through Facebook or another social media. The person being filmed will then usually provide some sort of strong reaction ranging from genuine confusion to complete shock at hearing this name.
The meme has also started to spin off into people referencing how they would feel if their future child randomly mentioned someone emotionally significant from their distant past.

Who is in the meme?
Basically anyone. This meme is equally funny for college freshmen being reminded of their 9th grade homecoming date or 60-year-old parents hearing their child mention a Facebook friend they haven’t spoken to since 2014.

When did the meme pop up?
This one is a bit tricky to track down because there’s no hashtag or anything else associated with the trend to find the meme’s patient zero. I’d estimate it started within the past week but don’t hold me to that.

Where is the meme?
Mainly TikTok, though the Hunger Games fandom has taken a particular liking to the meme on X.
Why is the meme?
The meme works because it’s a joke you can pull with basically anyone.
Anyone over the age of 16 probably has people in their life they haven’t spoken to in a minute where they’d be pretty surprised to hear them suddenly mentioned out loud by a friend or family member. Just to test this out, I checked Rachel’s Instagram to find a random person whose name I didn’t recognize and did this joke over Slack and managed to land on someone she did gymnastics with in elementary school.
Life is filled with people like a friend from fifth grade gymnastics where you’re probably going to have a pretty amusing reaction if someone else mentions them completely out-of-the-blue.
