It’s time for a special edition of the newsletter where I highlight a trending meme. If you’re new, you can subscribe here and follow me on Threads or X. Views are my own. Happy reading!
What is the meme?
Based on a TikTok soundbite, the memes revolve around the phrase “in da clerb, we all fam.”
The dialogue goes as follows:
“Do you know them?”
“No, but in da clerb, we all fam.”
“What?”
“In da clerb, we all fam.”
“I don’t–”
“In the club, we are all family. Are you racist?”

Who is in the meme?
The meme has gone from a lip-synched conversation exchange via video to abstract fandom groupings on text-based platforms. Some variations represent the genuine inflection of “we all fam” and some are posted ironically, emphasizing the tonal shift to “we are all family.” Those involved are neither in the club, nor family. Celebrities are hopping on the trend as well, including Charli xcx and Troye Sivan.
When did the meme pop up?
The earliest TikTok I could find was posted on Oct. 3, but the meme has become more popular over the past three or four days.
Where is the meme?
I’ve been seeing it on TikTok, Instagram, and X.
Why is the meme?
According to Mashable, the soundbite comes from an American sitcom called Broad City. “A YouTube video of it posted 8 years ago has over 80,000 views. The comments section is riddled with years-old messages like, ‘This still makes me laugh out loud’ and ‘I think about this scene a lot,’” Elena Cavender wrote.
Irony is timeless, and the internet is forever. Enjoy responsibly.
