Award shows seem to always have an element of awkwardness, but the emcee’s jokes for the 2024 Golden Globes1 on Sunday night were just plain uncomfortable.
Jo Koy made flat wisecracks about how Barbie was based on a “big doll with big boobies” and Taylor Swift got more screentime from ESPN than the Golden Globes.
He even blamed his writers at one point, saying, “Yo, I got the gig ten days ago. You want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up.”
Another side-plot was an apparent gossip sesh2 between Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift. Through lipreading, the internet believes they saw Gomez say that Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner refused to take a picture with her. (Gomez denies these accusations and went on a short-lived “Instagram break” after going viral).
Another Twitter user believed they saw Swift mouthing “piece of sh*t” as she took a video of Jo Koy.
Did I mention Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner? Yeah. Everyone was fixated on their PDA and lovey dovey looks. (Chalamet didn’t win a Golden Globe for his performance in Wonka).
In positive news, Lily Gladstone made history as the first Indigenous person to win a Golden Globe for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon, giving a beautiful acceptance speech that started in her native language.
"I'm so grateful that I can speak even a little bit of my language, which I'm not fluent in, up here because in this business, Native actors used to speak their lines in English and then the sound mixers would run them backwards to accomplish Native languages on camera,” Gladstone said.
They dedicated their win to "every little rez kid, every little urban kid, every little Native kid who has a dream, who is seeing themselves represented and our stories told by ourselves in our own words with tremendous allies and tremendous trust with and from each other.”
Brie Larson’s reaction to Greta Gerwig was adorable and so was Pedro Pascal’s reaction to Kieran Culkin jokingly telling him to “suck it” after winning the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama TV Series. Ayo Edebiri thanked her agents’ and managers’ assistants in her acceptance speech, procuring a head nod from Swift.
"To the people who answer my emails, y'all are real ones. Thank you for answering my crazy, crazy emails,” Edebiri said.
Let’s also not forget how an interviewer brought out a picture from The Bear co-star Jeremy Allen White’s photoshoot with Calvin Klein, to which Edebiri took the poster and flipped it back around against the wall, saying, “This is a work function.”
Jennifer Lawrence dramatically mouthed to the camera “If I don’t win, then I’m leaving,” cracking up the internet, then lost her mind for Emma Stone when she won, standing up and clapping. A Twitter user even joked that Lawrence should emcee the Golden Globes next year.
Let’s not forget the two new categories the Golden Globes created: “Cinematic and Box Office Achievement” and “Best Performance in Stand-up Comedy on Television.” Barbie took home Box Office Achievement, which notably included Swift’s documentary of her Eras Tour.
The outfits were stunning (okay, Barry Keoghan, go off), not to mention Margot Robbie’s day-to-night Barbie fit change for the Golden Globe afterparties. Succession, The Bear, Oppenheimer, and Poor Things took home big wins. Overall, an exciting and very interesting night.
(We also can’t forget the adorable and motherly moment Julianne Moore might have leaked Andrew Scott’s private Instagram account3).
