It’s time for a special edition of the newsletter where I highlight a trending meme for premium subscribers. If you want in, you can subscribe here. Views are my own. Happy reading!
Hi! I have some exciting news! Today is the first Meme Monday where a new contributor joins us. Rose Katz has been my long-time meme consultant (and friend) since we worked at our college paper together. You’re in good hands. I believe in transparency, so also I’ll let you know that the paid thing was a bit too challenging for me to work out at the moment. Hopefully some day you’ll be able to support me, but for right now Meme Mondays will stay outside the paywall

What is the meme?
This meme shows people using non-traditional or otherwise uncommon methods of transportation with the intentionally misspelled caption of “omw to the liqa sto.” The transportation methods range from farm animals to construction equipment as well as military planes and ships. The meme also includes an instrumental version of “Drunken Sailor,” a sea shanty you might recognize from SpongeBob SquarePants.
Who is in the meme?
Basically anyone who has access to some unique form of transportation. Some people opt to show their face in the meme, while others just let their unconventional mode of transport get all the attention. Another format is “had a slight mess up on my way to the licka stoe.”
When did the meme pop up?
The video that seemingly started this trend was posted on March 19 and you can find videos with over a million likes following the trend posted as recently as March 27.

Where is the meme?
TikTok, though the meme will likely propagate.
Why is the meme?
For me this is a pretty good example of the idea of subverting expectations in comedy. People normally use a car or bicycle to visit the liquor store (or anywhere else) so the idea of using a horse or a construction vehicle instead just feels delightfully silly to me. It also works because basically any “vehicle” besides a car or bike can be used for this joke, creating a meme that works with everything from riding a camel to riding a bulldozer.
The “Drunken Sailor” instrumental also works perfectly here, invoking the kind of comedic nonsense that has made SpongeBob one of the most beloved cartoons ever. The title of the song also seems like a logical choice for a meme about taking a trip to purchase some alcohol.
